Salinger (2013)

Salinger (2013)

PG-13 - 120 min - Documentary - 5 September 2013
Big Blue Sky Rating : 5.4/10

Director : Shane Salerno

Stars : Philip Seymour Hoffman, Edward Norton, Judd Apatow, John Cusack

An unprecedented look inside the private world of J.D. Salinger, the reclusive author of The Catcher in the Rye.

Unmasked

I loved this movie and found it thrilling. Only a few days ago did I begin to read Salinger's short stories again as well as RAISE HIGH THE ROOFBEAMS, CARPENTERS. Of course everyone has read THE CATCHER IN THE RYE and I agree it remains a right of passage.

I came to this movie with high hopes and that always scares me, because I set myself up for a downfall. This came through for me.

It is an intense psychological portrait. The 299 days he spent at continuous war, from D-Day to the concentration camps, most certainly carved out his soul to his dying day. And how could it not? As someone who has always been interested in platonic love, I was very moved by his friendship(s) with young women that did not include sex.

This movie thoroughly investigates the ego, drive, and mystery of this artist. The portrait is not always flattering and sometimes it is downright pitiful, but it seems genuine to me.

I would recommend it to not only fans but also any writer or artist who knows something about the thrill of achievement and the horror of fame.

I look forward to the publication of the posthumous work with relish.

20 Feet from Stardom (2013)

PG-13 - 91 min - Documentary, History, Music - 28 November 2013
Big Blue Sky Rating : 7.2/10

Director : Morgan Neville

Stars : Darlene Love, Merry Clayton, Lisa Fischer, Judith Hill

The backup singer exists in a strange place in the pop music world; they are always in the shadow of the feature artists even when they are in front of them in concert while they provide a vital foundation for the music. Through interviews with veterans and concert footage, the history of these predominately African-American singers is explored through the rock era. Furthermore, special focus is given to special stand outs who endeavored to make a living in the art burdened with a low profile and more personal career frustrations, especially those who faced the very different challenge of singing in the spotlight themselves.

It's Just a Shot Away

Greetings again from the darkness. "And the colored girls go do doo doo, do doo ...". The controversial lyrics from Lou Reed's "Walk on the Wild Side" kick off this exceptional documentary about the oft-ignored back-up singers who have played (and continue to play) a huge role in some of the biggest songs of all-time. You may not know their names, but you have undoubtedly sung along with them while driving or taking a shower.

Director Morgan Neville has a credit list filled with music shorts and documentaries. One of my personal favorites of his is The American Masters on Muddy Waters. I recalled that while watching this one because Neville does a nice job of connecting the dots from Gospel, Blues and Soul to the roots of Rock and Roll. The main women featured here all admit to being daughters of preachers, and fine-tuning their ability to harmonize during their youth while singing in the church choir.

Most of the interview time and insight comes from Darlene Love, Lisa Fischer, and Merry Clayton. You may not recognize the names or faces, but you will surely recognize the voices. Ms. Love has been elected to the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame, and may be best known thanks to her annual appearance on the David Letterman Show at Christmas. Ms. Fischer is the most frequent worker today of the three as she tours with Chris Botti, Sting and The Rolling Stones. However, the heart-stopping climax of the film belongs to Merry Clayton, as we are treated to her isolated vocals from the master on her infamous performance on the single "Gimme Shelter". Hearing her raw voice blast out "Rape. Murder. It's just a shot away" is both exhilarating and gut-wrenching. To hear her tell the story is mesmerizing. One of my favorite movie moments ever.

While we see and hear the personal stories filled with frustration and regrets, we also see an inherent love of music and the appreciation for their particular gift. We also hear from Tata Vega, Dr. Mabel John (a former Raelette for Ray Charles), and Claudia Lennear. With many similar stories of their quest for solo careers, we get the contemporary version with Judith Hill, a twenty-something working back-up today as she strives for a solo career. The parallels are obvious with her older peers.

Another excellent feature of the film comes in the form of interviews from the likes of Bruce Springsteen, Sting, Stevie Wonder, Lou Adler, Chris Botti, and Mick Jagger. We also see some studio shots featuring Phil Spector (once the hottest music producer, now incarcerated), and concert footage of Talking Heads, Ray Charles, The Rolling Stones, and the Concert for Bangladesh. It's especially fitting to see Luther Vandross as a back-up singer to David Bowie's "Young Americans", and to hear from Sheryl Crow, who worked as Michael Jackson's back-up/lead female. These are the examples of the back-ups who successfully made the walk.

My only minor quibble with the film is structural, not content. Neville has an over-whelming task of addressing each of the individual stories, while also relating it to the nasty and unfair music business, the Civil Rights movement, the development of Rock and Roll, and the role that "talent" plays in what Springsteen terms the "complicated" walk from back-up to lead singer (the titular 20 feet). The segment focusing on Merry Clayton's role in Lynyrd Skynyrd's "Sweet Home Alabama" is especially poignant. Overall this film is fascinating and entertaining, and makes a great companion piece to Standing in the Shadows of Motown (2002) and Muscle Shoals (2013).

Good Ol' Freda (2013)

PG - 86 min - Documentary, Biography, History, Music - 6 September 2013
Big Blue Sky Rating : 6.1/10

Director : Ryan White
Writers : Jessica Lawson, Ryan White
Stars : Freda Kelly, Paul McCartney, John Lennon, George Harrison

'Good Ol' Freda' tells the story of Freda Kelly, a shy Liverpudlian teenager asked to work for a young local band hoping to make it big: the Beatles. As the Beatles' fame multiplies, Freda bears witness to music and cultural history but never exploits her insider access. Their loyal secretary from beginning to end, Freda finally tells her tales for the first time in 50 years.

Yesterday

Watching this film brought me right back to the 60's when I was a teenager. I remember so many things from that time, the air raid sirens, the bay of pigs, the JFK assassination and then the Beatles. They were a breath of fresh air for a troubled world. Their songs were simple but beautiful. People went wild over their music, yes there was a future and it was fantastic. They stood for something really important. I looked at the faces in the film, filled with hope. Everyone looked so skinny and healthy! I loved the shots of the cavern club and everyone answering letters in the small office over the record shop. I liked the viewpoint of someone from behind the scenes. But of course I don't think for one minute that hiring Freda was an accident. Brian Epstein obviously had a totally uncanny ability of hiring the right person for the job. The Beatles were advanced beings and obviously so is Freda. Wonderful film, really put tears in my eyes. After the film was over (Bloor HotDocs Toronto) the director Ryan White gave a Q/A over Skype. This was an unexpected bonus and really added dimension to how the film came together.

Informant (2012)

81 min - Documentary - 13 September 2013
Big Blue Sky Rating : 5.0/10

Director : Jamie Meltzer
Writers : Jamie Meltzer
Stars : Brandon Darby, Scott Crow, Lisa Fithian, Caroline Heldman

A documentary on radical left-wing activist turned FBI informant, Brandon Darby.

This guy is so full of himself

OK, it is clear from the very beginning this guy may just be one of the biggest B.S.er's on the Planet. Brandon Darby is the proto-typical teenage middle class white kid who runs away from home wearing his Che Guevara T-shirt and falls for every "revolutionary", damn the man, cause that comes down the pipe. He is arrogant, aggressive, thinks he knows better than everybody else and then finds himself in a world where he realizes that he know very little.

The problem with this guys "stories" (whether some of them are true or untrue) is he is the same figure that makes up most left wing radicals. They just want attention and will seek out every cause on the planet until they find one they can make a name, and hopefully fame and money from.

My guess is that most of these crazy activist leftist groups saw this dude for who he was....a B.S. er. and when he couldn't become that star he became an informant. He became an informant because he was just seeking some sort of "exciting" life. He really could care less about anyone else.

The kids who got busted for the molotav cocktails deserved to get busted. They say they had no intention of using them, but why then create them at all? One said he didn't know just making them was a crime...Ignorance is no excuse and its an incendiary device, what kind of idiot thinks thats OK?

Either way, Brandon, David, and anyone involved are all self absorbed idiots. Which pains me to give it a 7, but just because I don't like the people involved doesn't mean it's not a decent film.

All-in-all this just shows the loopy extreme left-wing and how they prey on young, white, middle class people, and many of them just grow out of that stage, but some just become pawns in this fake, "damn the man," fight they always create out of thin air. Teach your kids reality, when you see them wearing Che Guevara shirts, and joining activist groups, teach them some history so that they don't believe the revisionist history that the left tries to teach today.

A documentary centered on a young Frenchman who claims to a grieving Texas family that he is their 16-year-old son who has been missing for 3 years.

Truly Speechless

I just finished experiencing "The Imposter" for I think the 4th time this month. I am absolutely in love with this film. My new favorite. Around 2/3 of the film (during my first viewing on my computer) I paused the film and looked online regarding the subject. I just did not believe this was real. Not only is this story absurd but the way in which it is presented is what makes "The Imposter" a true "experience." In addition, as a film student, I really appreciate the way in which the live action parts of the film are shot. They are mesmerizing. The editing, cinematography- it's all too much and so well executed. If you're thinking about seeing it/ renting it/ buying it, I don't know what you're waiting for. Better This World (2011)

82 min - Documentary - 23 April 2011
Big Blue Sky Rating : 6.8/10

Director : Kelly Duane, Katie Galloway

Stars : Scott Crow, Brandon Darby, Matthew Vadum

A pair of childhood friends from Texas who set out to prove themselves.

A Powerful Film that Speaks Truth to Power

It was a pleasure to attend the World Premiere of Better This World at Austin's SXSW Film Festival. This film tells the Kafkaesque story of how two young idealistic political activists from Texas – Brad Crowder and David McKay - were charged with domestic terrorism while protesting at the 2008 Republican National Convention in Minneapolis, MN. Better This World raises serious questions about the abuse of civil liberties in the post-9/11 "War on Terror." The two key issues that emerge are 1) The use of government informants to entrap people into committing criminal acts and the 2) The widespread practice of using plea bargaining to entice the criminally accused into admitting guilt and accepting a lighter sentence rather than risk a much longer sentence at trial. The use of informants is an issue that is rarely discussed, but seems to be increasingly common in recent years. The issue of plea bargaining has recently been spotlighted in several films about the events in Tulia, TX and the feature film American Violet.

Both practices raise serious questions about how far the police and prosecutors will bend the rules in order to make their cases. The film is well-made and compelling examination of how the justice system acted to tear apart the lives of two young men who never hurt anyone and seemed at worst to be guilty of poor judgment. There will always be a balance between protecting civil liberties and seeking to secure justice and protect public safety. In this case and too many others in recent years, it seems as if we've failed to protect the rights of the criminally accused. As Ben Franklin told us centuries ago, "They that can give up essential liberty to obtain a little temporary safety deserve neither safety nor liberty." If we sacrifice our civil liberties, we sacrifice our democracy. Films like Better This World force us to ask difficult questions about how our democracy functions.

Better This World is scheduled for broadcast on PBS's POV in the fall. It deserves to be widely seen as we seek "a more perfect union."

PG-13 - 106 min - Documentary, Biography, Sport - 25 May 2011
Big Blue Sky Rating : 8.5/10

Director : Asif Kapadia
Writers : Manish Pandey
Stars : Ayrton Senna, Alain Prost, Frank Williams, Ron Dennis

The story of the monumental life and tragic death of legendary Brazilian motor-racing Champion, Ayrton Senna. Spanning the decade from his arrival in Formula One in the mid 80's, the film follows Senna's struggles both on track against his nemesis, French World Champion Alain Prost, and off it, against the politics which infest the sport. Sublime, spiritual yet, on occasion, ruthless - Senna conquers and transcends Formula One to become a global superstar. Privately, he is humble, almost shy, and fiercely patriotic, donating millions to his native Brasil and contemplating a life beyond motor-racing. Yet he is struck down in his prime on the blackest weekend in the history of the sport, watched live on television by 300 million people. Years on he is revered in Formula One as the greatest motor racing driver of all time - and in Brasil as a Saint.

Truly Remarkable

I had been a Fan of Ayrton when I was a child. I distinctly remember watching the F1 highlights with my dad. My dad was a seasonal fanatic of sports and kept updating me with the news from the papers/sports magazines and the television.

To relive the moments of Ayrton (the idol) in this emotionally gripping documentary was unbelievably comforting. The script and flow of the events were so flawlessly presented taking one's memory into the Time travel of decade gone by. It was nothing short of Excellence in execution.

The documentary dissects Ayton's persona in a subtle way, making it the most compelling Biography of all times. The back-ground score by Antonio Pinto was Enthralling and Sensual delight.

This is not to be missed, sad that I had been to the cinema only on the final day when it was shown-much regret the delay. Nevertheless, Its a true Masterpiece which portrays the subtle sadness of a legend's demise in a sweet throat stifling moments.

Salinger (2013)

PG-13 - 120 min - Documentary - 5 September 2013
Big Blue Sky Rating : 5.4/10

Director : Shane Salerno

Stars : Philip Seymour Hoffman, Edward Norton, Judd Apatow, John Cusack

An unprecedented look inside the private world of J.D. Salinger, the reclusive author of The Catcher in the Rye.

The great writer remains a mystery.

". . . I'm standing on the edge of some crazy cliff. What I have to do, I have to catch everybody if they start to go over the cliff—I mean if they're running and they don't look where they're going I have to come out from somewhere and catch them. That's all I'd do all day. I'd just be the catcher in the rye and all." Holden Caulfield, The Catcher in the Rye

No writer in the 20th century cultivated such an obsessive privacy as J. D. Salinger. As famed as his Catcher in the Rye was, he was equally jealous of his privacy. Shane Salerno's documentary "Salinger" does a modest job highlighting his almost hermit life in New England. However, the above quote reveals as much as any documentary could hope to do the innocence and privacy of Salinger's iconic character and maybe himself.

Otherwise, this doc is occasionally and unintentionally hilarious when it uses the same still photos of Salinger over and over for want of an extant variety. A few of the talking heads are actors who may have no real cred to talk about the author (Martin Sheen, Phillip Seymour Hoffman); at other times the real deals like author and friend A.E. Hotchner and noted writer Gore Vidal comment with insight.

The women such as Joyce Maynard, who lived with him, and his daughter Margaret provide the best insight into his emotional and physical isolation. Beyond these first-hand recollections, it's hard for director Shane Salerno to shake anything new from the Salinger tree of life. The Internet holds the same information.

Then there's the heavy-handed music, most amusingly prominent in the final sequence that reveals what the Internet already has disclosed: Salinger, who died in 2010 at 91, authorized several original works to be released between 2015 and 2020. This information is about the only new material in the documentary.

In the end, Salinger himself is in charge. Most of the commentary is broad and speculative, lacking the inside information the world clamors for. He is as rebellious and disdainful of phoniness as Holden Caulfield. Actually, he probably is Caulfield--I fit right in with the other clueless commentators.

J.D. Salinger remains an enigma and a powerful one at that: "If three people used something I wrote in this fashion, I'd be very troubled by it." Playwright John Guare on crimes by Catcher in the Rye devotees.

Inequality for All (2013)

PG - 89 min - Documentary - 27 September 2013
Big Blue Sky Rating : 6.1/10

Director : Jacob Kornbluth

Stars : Robert Reich

A documentary that follows former U.S. Labor Secretary Robert Reich as he looks to raise awareness of the country's widening economic gap.

An Economic Inconvenient Truth

I just caught this film at the 56th San Francisco International Film Festival, and I'm glad I did, because the film was one of the most informative and, quite frankly, entertaining documentaries I've seen via the Festival, and most of the credit for that goes directly to the film's "star" Robert Reich.

Reich is a charming and personable individual who is obviously passionate about the sorry economic state of the middle class. He presents facts and reviews history (assisted through some terrific graphics) to make his case that a strong middle class is the bulwark upon which a thriving upper class must balance. Most importantly, this middle class is made weaker by the disparity in incomes and by a tax system that seems to reward "job creators" who don't really create a single damn job or, at best, create jobs overseas.

The issues are pretty damn complex, but Reich and Kornbluth do an excellent job of laying out their interpretations in a simple, forthright manner.

At the Q&A following the film, I asked Kornbluth and Reich if they felt any need to "balance" the film with alternate economic takes on the same facts. The film trots out the usual cartoonish Fox News critics, but I wondered if they thought about heading off the sure-to-come criticism that the film is too one-sided and doesn't present any intelligent alternate viewpoints. While Reich just shook his head "no" (one gets the impression he feels he isn't wrong so why bother,) Kornbluth responded that questions like mine ticked him off, as "there always doesn't have to be two sides to a story." He compared it to the issue of evolution and "intelligent design". Just as intelligent design's complete lack of factual basis has no business in a documentary about evolution, he felt the economic facts presented are facts and they were presented accurately in his film.

This film is a terrific pairing of a passionate filmmaker with a passionate advocate for the working class of this nation. Recommended viewing for anyone with a stake in our country's economic survival- regardless of political affiliation. That means everyone. That means you.

Muscle Shoals (2013)

Muscle Shoals (2013)

PG - 111 min - Documentary, Biography, History, Music - 25 October 2013
Big Blue Sky Rating : 5.9/10

Director : Greg 'Freddy' Camalier

Stars : Rick Hall, Aretha Franklin, Keith Richards, Candi Staton. A documentary that celebrates Rick Hall, the founder of FAME Studios in Muscle Shoals, Alabama, and the signature sound he developed in songs such as "I'll Take You There", "Brown Sugar", and "When a Man Loves a Woman"." />

Located alongside the Tennessee River, Muscle Shoals, Alabama is the unlikely breeding ground for some of America's most creative and defiant music. Under the spiritual influence of the 'Singing River' as Native Americans called it, the music of Muscle Shoals changed the world and sold millions upon millions of copies. At its heart is Rick Hall who founded FAME Studios. Overcoming crushing poverty and staggering tragedies, he brought black and white together in Alabama's cauldron of racial hostility to create music for the generations while giving birth to the 'Muscle Shoals Sound' and 'The Swampers'. Mick Jagger, Keith Richards, Percy Sledge, Gregg Allman, Clarence Carter, Etta James, Alicia Keys, Bono, and others bear witness to Muscle Shoals' magnetism, mystery, and why it remains influential today.

The only puzzling thing about Muscle Shoals is how this story went so long without being told.

Have you ever heard of Muscle Shoals, Alabama? Let me rephrase the question – have you heard an Aretha Franklin song? Have you ever grooved to Wicked Wilson Pickett's Land of 1000 Dances? Have you ever thought "Yes Percy Sledge, that is EXACTLY what happens when a man loves a woman!" Have you ever driven way to fast while the Rolling Stones' Brown Sugar blasted through your speakers? If you answered yes to any of those questions, then you have heard of Muscle Shoals, Alabama or at least you're heard the Muscle Shoals sound, the subject of the documentary Muscle Shoals from director Greg 'Freddy' Camalier.

In the interest of full disclosure, these are my people ya'll! I grew up just east of Muscle Shoals, also on the banks of the Tennessee River – "The Singing River" to the Native Americans who made their home there for millenia before Rick Hall founded FAME studios. Driven by a need to escape the crushing poverty and overwhelming tragedy that befalls him, Hall is the central figure in the story of the famed "Muscle Shoals sound" – well him and a group of homegrown, white as cotton studio musicians known as the "Swampers". These men shaped what ultimately proved to be some of the finest rock, soul, and R&B America would ever produce.

Music docs can really go either way, depending on such bureaucratic mundanities as rights and clearances. Muscle Shoals is a triumph, though. All personal bias aside, present day interviews with music luminaries, expertly deployed found footage and stills, and the greatest soundtrack a movie could hope for, all make Muscle Shoals one of the finest music documentaries you'll ever see. Let the participation of such bright lights as Aretha Franklin, Wilson Pickett, Mick Jagger, Keith Richards, Bono, Jerry Wexler, Percy Sledge, Alicia Keys, Gregg Allman, Clarence Carter, and Etta James serve as a testament to the enduring magic that is Muscle Shoals, FAME studios, and that greasy, soulful sound. The only puzzling thing about Muscle Shoals is how this story went so long without being told.

Linsanity (2013)

PG - 89 min - Documentary - 4 October 2013
Big Blue Sky Rating : 4.6/10

Director : Evan Leong
Writers : Aaron Strongoni
Stars : Jeremy Lin, Daniel Dae Kim, Ming Yao, Landry Fields

In February 2012, an entire nation of basketball fans unexpectedly went 'Linsane.' Stuck in the mire of a disappointing season, the New York Knicks did what no other NBA team had thought about doing. They gave backup point guard Jeremy Lin an opportunity to prove himself. He took full advantage, scoring more points in his first five NBA starts than any other player in the modern era, and created a legitimate public frenzy in the process. Prior to this now-legendary run, Lin had faced adversity in his career at every turn. He wasn't offered a scholarship by any major university, nor was he drafted by any NBA team after a standout collegiate career at Harvard.

A Great Sports Bio of a Breakthrough Player

I had the pleasure of seeing Linsanity this evening at the SXSW Film Festival. The film was extremely warmly received. After the showing, we were joined by not only the director and crew, but by the one and only Jeremy Lin himself. The director and his crew did an excellent job in presenting a very personal and moving portrait of Jeremy, his struggles to overcome stereotypes, and particularly how he drew strength from his faith and his culture. The film benefited from the fact that the crew started film Jeremy several years ago when he was a senior at Harvard and long before his rise to international stardom last year. They were thus able to show the story of his high school and college careers when he had gained some recognition, but was not a huge star. The level of racism that he encountered was quite disturbing. Jeremy's strength in the face of adversity is truly inspiring. I expect that this film will be picked up by ESPN and broadcast widely in the next few months. The film should be appealing to both sports fans and non- sports fans. While it is the journey of an athlete, it is really a story of perseverance and hard work that goes beyond just the realm of sports and should be widely relevant to people who have struggled in a wide variety of endeavors.
